I learned about filmmaker
Geno Brooks
while screening Lamont Pierre’s “Talking with The Taxman about Poetry.”
What I learned was that Geno is a 360 degree filmmaker. He directs, writes, acts, shoots, and produces feature films, new media projects (webseries), and more.
Lamont Pierre, and
Jared Wofford.
Last week in Los Angeles, Shadow and Act caught up with Geno to briefly discuss his filmmaker career journey, Season Two of his award winning webseries, “The Therapist,” and more.
Shadow and Act: Can you briefly tell us your story?
GB: I’m a kid from the projects of the south side of Chicago that had a Hollywood Dreams.
Shadow and Act: Can you tell us about your experience working on Talking with the Taxman about Poetry? The film was amazing.
GB: Thank you. I initially met Lamont because he was looking for a Cinematographer. At our follow up meeting, I presented some ideas that I had for the look of the film that would complement his script. I also informed him that I felt that I had the resources to support his efforts in producing this film. Lamont then said he had planned to ask me if I’d be interested in co-producing. The rest is history.
Shadow and Act: Why are you a filmmaker?
GB: I direct, act, & write. I’m a filmmaker because I feel that I have stories that need to be told. There is no better way to express your feelings or create art, in my opinion.
Shadow and Act: You are the creator of the award-winning webseries “The Therapist”. Can you tell us about the project?
GB: I hold a Masters Degree in Therapy/Rehabilitation. I’ve been working as a therapist for the past 5 years. I’ve always wanted to be a filmmaker so after working in the field I thought it was time to make that transition.
“The Therapist”, is a drama focused around a relationship therapist and 3 couples at different stages of their relationships that seek her counsel. In the mist of trying to mend their relationships, she neglects her own.
Shadow and Act: What prompted you to have a season two?
GB: We were definitely brought back for a season 2 because of our fans. Our fans are extremely loyal. We will release our new season in mid-April.
Shadow and Act: What talent can we expect to see in this season?
GB: We have KJ Smith as Dr. Monica Knight, Isaac Keys as Jacob Thompson, and Nia Witts as Tasha Thompson. We were able to add several new cast members including Laila Odom of Zane’s Sex Chronicles, who’s also a producer this season, & Cherri Johnson of Family Matters. Kareem Grimes and J. Kristopher are also featured cast members. I’m reprising my role as the husband of Dr. Monica Knight.
Shadow and Act: What’s coming up next for you?
GB: Were in pre-production for another of Lamont’s projects “The Execution of Nigel Harris, I’m writing my first feature, and I’m excited that I just signed to new management with Misha K. Sampson of the Seven Seven Management.
