Some new images of the lovely and sylish cast and crew from a project on my 2012 short list of black indies to watch, Nefertite Nguvu's In The Morning, taken by Jenn Nkiru.
The film – a feature – was shot in 9 days by the way!
And, repeating what I've already said about the project, with the talent involved in this production, both in front of and behind the camera, I'm looking forward to seeing what this looks, sounds and feels like.
In the meantime, we'll have to settle for a few behind-the-scenes still images captured during principal photography, embedded above and the rest below…
First, for those just joining us… a shorter description of the project:
In The Morning is a film about love and transitions. It examines the complexities of love from the perspective of three women in the midst of some hard won self-transformation. It’s a mood piece that weaves together three stories about personal growth and the power of choice and action.
Second, recapping the film's impressive ensemble cast which includes French/Burkinabe actor Jacky Ido in the role of Malik. Most will likely recognize him from Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, playing Marcel to Mélanie Laurent's vengeful Shosanna; for the geeks out there, he's also Cédric Ido's older brother (Cédric directed the African Samurai short film Hasaki Ya Suda I profiled on this site last year, which also starred big brother Jacky); Emayatzy Corinealdi (who got the world's attention with her starring role in Ava DuVernay'ssophomore fictional narrative effort Middle of Nowhere) as Cadence; Hoji Fortuna (of course the wonderful villain from Djo Munga's 2011 genre flick Viva Riva!) as Ravi; the original lead singer of the Black Eyed Peas, soul singer Kim Hill as Harper; JoNell Kennedy (from Miranda July's Me And You And Everyone We Know) as Amara; Tony Award-nominated actress De'adre Aziza (Stew's rock musical Passing Strange which Spike Lee made a documentary on) as Zuri; Numa Perrier (most recently, you'll recognize her from Dennis Dortch's new web series The Couple, which we've featured on S&A) as Bly; and completing the cast are newcomers C.J. Lindsey as Leal, and Alzo Slade as Fez, both making their film debuts.
Principal photography began on March 24th, in Brooklyn, NY, and ended about a week ago, with post-production next.
