What we already know: Screen Gems is remaking the 1986 rom-com, About Last Night, and Kevin Hart was the first actor to be cast in the project that centers on a man and woman who try to have a romantic affair, but are hindered by their own personal problems, as well as the interference of their disapproving friends.
Also, as of about 2 weeks ago, Hart's Think Like A Man co-stars Michael Ealy and Regina Hall were in early talks to join him in the remake.
And lastly, Will Packer (who also produced TLAM) is producing this as well.
What's the latest: The remake now has an official titled – Sexual Perversity in Chicago – the original title of the 1974 David Mamet play that the first film adaptation was based on. So maybe the story of thing upcoming all-black version will be closer to Mamet's original play, which I read was more caustic than the 1986 rom-com, full of profanity and jargon that reflects the working-class, presenting "intimate relationships [as] minefields of buried fears and misunderstandings."
The 1986 film was more of your relatively tame traditional rom-com with a happy ending. In fact, it was said that Mamet washed his hands of the film at the time.
And secondly, Steve Pink is said to be in talks to direct the Will Packer-produced film update of the play. Who's Steve Pink? He's a writer, director, producer, and his last effort as a director was 2010's Hot-Tub Time Machine. He's also attached to helm Bad Santa 2 and The Toxic Avenger.
Pink will be directing froma script by Leslye Headland. She's a relative newbie who worked on a TV show called Terriers in 2010.
A fall production start date is likely.
The original film's synopsis:
Danny and Bernie are two single men living their lives on the wild side. But when Danny meets Debbie at a bar and the two start a relationship with a one night stand, Danny's life takes a different turn. How does this passionate night become a full affair and what effect will this relationship have on both people and their friendship with their best mates?
Edward Zwick directed the original that starred Rob Lowe and Demi Moore as the couple who meet (Danny and Debbie), and James Belushi played Danny's best friend, Bernie. Elizabeth Perkins played Joan, Debbie's best friend.
Hart has signed on to play the Belushi role; while Ealy is said to be in talks to play the lead, originated by Rob Lowe.
Regina Hall will play the role originated on film by Elizabeth Perkins, the best friend, who has a love/hate relationship with Hart's character.
The female lead (played by Demi Moore in the first film) is yet to be cast. Although since it appears to be a Think Like A Man reunion we could say, Gabrielle Union, Taraji P. Henson and Meagan Good seemingly are likely all options. Although maybe we'll be surprised by a selection no one at all expects.
