Yesterday, we reported that Erica Garner's anonymous coworker was keeping us updated via Twitter on the status of Garner's health condition. According to family members, Garner had a heart attack on Christmas Eve that was initially triggered by an asthma attack. Since then, she was placed in a medically-induced coma at Woodhull Hospital where she was placed in ICU and on life support.

On Thursday morning, family members were called in to say final goodbyes to Erica, after the doctor declared her brain dead with a slim chance of recovery.

“She’s not gone, she’s brain dead,” Garner’s heartbroken mother explained to the NY Daily News. “Physically she is still with us.”

Erica Garner first suffered her first heart attack a few months ago, shortly after delivering her son who she named after her fallen father. Doctor's informed the family that the pregnancy caused her intense stress due to her already enlarged heart. Garner's mother shared that Erica wasn't aware of this particular condition.

27-year-old Erica first gained notoriety after the death of her father in 2014 at the hands of New York Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo. She has since become one of the most prominent activists in the Black Lives Matter movement. She has challenged former President Barack Obama's administration and Justice Department for its investigation into Eric Garner's death.

Blavity will provide additional updates on Erica Garner's progress as details become available. Until then, our prayers and thoughts go out to the entire Garner family and loved ones.
