Malcolm Goodwin’s coming-of-age drama A True Story, has been acquired by Freestyle Releasing and Freestyle Digital Media, for a simultaneous (day-and-date) theatrical and VOD release in September.

The exact day will soon be announced.

A True Story follows two broke Hollywood writers (played by Cameron Fife and Tyler McGee, who also penned the screenplay for the film) dealing with the ups and downs of romance, friendships, hopes and dreams, while waiting for their big break into the industry.

Goodwin, Fife and McGee also produced the indie feature.

Primarily an actor, who’s appeared in both film and TV (Breakout Kings is probably his most notable work), Goodwin also stars in A True Story, a film that, according to IMDB, was actually shot in 2010, and was Goodwin’s feature directorial debut.

Katrina Bowden (30 Rock), Kelen Coleman (The Mindy Project)Keith Loneker (Lakeview Terrace) and Jon Gries (Napoleon Dynamite) round out the cast.

“This is a fun and honest film about two guys chasing their Hollywood dreams while trying to survive the nightmares in their everyday life. It’s a true labor of love, fueled by the fact that every artist involved in the process of making this film has at some point been in our two main characters’ shoes,” said Goodwin to THR.

The DVD/VOD deal was brokered by FDM’s Susan Jackson, with the producer’s rep Bill Vergos of SpyFilmz on behalf of Team Awesome Films.
