Adele received an emotional surprise while on stage performing for her ITV concert special "An Audience With Adele," which aired in the U.K. on Sunday night. CNN reports she was reunited with her beloved high school English teacher, Ms. McDonald, for a brief moment on camera.

The teacher apparently left such an impression on the soulful singer during her formative years that she broke into tears upon reuniting on stage.

In the prerecorded concert, which featured celebrities including Samuel L. Jackson, Jodie Comer and Idris Elba, Adele took a question from actress Emma Thompson. Thompson inquired if Adele had anyone who inspired her, supported her and protected her from life's obstacles.

"I had a teacher at (south London high school) Chestnut Grove, who taught me English. That was Miss McDonald… She got me really into English literature. Like, I've always been obsessed with English and obviously, now I write lyrics," the "Easy on Me" singer answered. 

"She was so bloody cool. So engaging," she continued, recounting how McDonald typically wore sequins and gold bracelets.  "She really made us care, and we knew that she cared about us."

Shortly after she answered the question, she looked up to see the teacher walking down the aisle coming to greet her for the first time in years. They quickly embraced each other as Adele continued to softly cry on stage, in shock from the surprise. 

"I'm so proud of you," McDonald told Adele. "Thank you for remembering me."

"You really did change my life," Adele responded, adding that McDonald looked exactly the same.

Then she looked to the crowd for her mother, "Mum! Mum, can you believe it?"

Adele went on to ask if the teacher was still forming the minds of students, but McDonald revealed she quit teaching so she could focus on raising her two children, who were also in the audience. She asked for the teacher's number so they could stay in touch before running off the stage to get her makeup fixed. For a brief moment, comedian Alan Carr took the stage to perform his rendition of "Make You Feel My Love," Entertainment Weekly reports.

The singer, who has been promoting her latest album, 30, reminisced on the night via Twitter the next morning, telling her followers how overjoyed she was to have shared the experience with everyone.

"There was so much love in the room for each other, it felt like such a gig! Everyone was raucous and bang up for it! And my teacher Ms McDonald was there, it was just heaven," she tweeted.
