In 2018, the rapper Akon unveiled plans to develop his own city in Senegal, West Africa.
The Grammy-nominated rapper stated that his city, named "Akon City," would be built on 2,000 acres of land that was given to him by Senegal President Macky Sall. The city would also trade in Akon's own currency dubbed AKoin, CNN previously reported.
His aspirations are now a reality. The rapper, whose real name is Aliaume Thiam, has just finalized an agreement for the official opening of Akon City.
In a tweet on Monday, Akon made a statement inviting visitors and enthusiasts alike.

"Looking forward to hosting you in the future," the tweet read.
The city reportedly has a duration time of 10 years being reserved for building. Phase one of building has begun, and the second phase is expected to begin in 2025, according to Travel+Leisure.
The rapper was raised in Senegal and relocated to Union City, New Jersey, at the age of seven. His attempts to keep tight connections to his roots run across the board; he is also considering a venture into politics.
"I really want to make the biggest impact in Africa for sure, If I could have my way, Africa would be the United States of Africa," the rapper told CNN in 2013.
During his November 18 appearance on The Real, Akon discussed being multilingual and his philanthropic work bringing electricity to rural communities in Africa with his Akon Lighting Project. The musical artist and entrepreneur also took the time to discuss a possible presidential run in 2024. The 46-year-old talked briefly about how his experiences could guide him in discovering answers for the nation that others would not see, as Blavity previously reported.
"I know what the issues are,” Akon told the hosts. “As a person, as an immigrant, as a Black man, as whatever you want to call it, I kinda know or feel like I know that I can take the country and move it forward. I really believe so," Akon stated.
"When I travel, I see so many things that happen, so many people that need assistance and so many things that need to be resolved, and if you can have a billion dollars sitting in the bank while you have all these people suffering and struggling, man, to me, it’s just crazy,” the rapper said in an interview with Nick Cannon in November 2019.
The international star has received five Grammy nominations and has sold 35 million records across the globe. He's worked with Snoop Dogg, Michael Jackson, Lil' Wayne, Eminem, Lady Gaga and Gwen Stefani, to name a few.
Akon has also had 27 tracks on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, he's the first artist to simultaneously hold the number one and two spots on the Billboard Hot 100 charts not once, but twice.
The self-dubbed "social entrepreneur" is also the owner of Akonik Label Group which is under the BMG Umbrella. ALG features different genres, Akonda (Afrobeats), Akonik (U.S.), Jamakon (Caribbean) and Ke Lo Ke (Latin America).
