Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, Erika Alexander and Leslie Uggams are taking on America’s stereotypes in the first images of the upcoming film American Fiction.

It is the feature directorial debut of HBO’s Watchmen and Succession writer Cord Jefferson.

In the images, Wright and Ross are also featured with Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, Erika Alexander and Leslie Uggams in a story about a struggling writer trying to achieve fame while confronting the ideas American society has about race. According to the description:

AMERICAN FICTION is Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

The film is adapted by Jefferson and based on the novel Erasure by Percival Everett. The film also stars Adam Brody and John Ortiz. Executive producers include Everett, Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman. Jefferson, Jermaine Johnson, Nikos Karamigios and Ben LeClair serve as producers. American Fiction is distributed by Orion Pictures and MRC with T-Street, Almost Infinite and 3 Arts Entertainment producing.

American Fiction will make its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival Sept. 8. The film comes to select theaters Nov. 3 and expands Nov. 17.
