Through its partnership with the Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance, the Atlanta Dream is ushering in an inaugural event to both celebrate the HBCU experience and pay homage to the “Divine Nine.”

The news was announced late last week, and the event — dubbed “For the Culture: D9 + HBCU Week,” will take place on two different nights: July 28 and July 30, when the Atlanta Dream will respectively go head-to-head against the Minnesota Lynx and the Dallas Wings.

While this isn’t the WNBA team’s first HBCU night, it is its first multiday celebration that’ll pay homage to HBCUs as well as the Divine Nine — a group of groundbreaking fraternities and sororities that are historically Black. July 28 will be focused on celebrating HBCUs, and July 30 will be the team’s Divine Nine Night.

As for the halftime entertainment, the ATL Drum Academy is performing on July 28, and the Delta Sigma Theta sorority will celebrate Divine Nine during the July 30 halftime show.

As the event is done in partnership with the Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance, $5 from each purchased ticket will go toward funding local scholarships. Specifically, funds from the July 28 game will go toward the Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance Scholarship Fund, and the NPHC Greater Atlanta Scholarship Program will get proceeds from the July 30 game.

On top of this, the Atlanta Dream and the Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance are also providing two scholarships, which are focused on “recognizing local female athletes who have exhibited athletic excellence on the court and in the classroom, including leadership, teamwork, dedication, resilience and confidence.”
