A Black woman lawyer has been identified as a victim in a shooting that happened Wednesday at an Atlanta high-rise apartment building, CBS46 reports.

The shooting happened in the early hours of the day, just before police responded to the scene and discovered shots coming from the 21st floor of the Atlantic House apartments on West Peachtree Street, 13WMAZ reports

The gunman, identified as Jarvis Jarrette, has been connected to the victim, Courtney Cox. The two had started dating over the summer and had met at the apartment complex where the shooting took place.

Jarrette is accused of exchanging gunfire with Atlanta police on a balcony before he was either shot or killed himself. Preliminary evidence also showed that the suspected gunman was jumping between balconies at the complex.

“It appeared he was shooting both inside and outside the building,” the police chief told local news outlet CBS46.

Family members of both Cox and Jarrette said they are devastated over the shooting.

One of the bullets during the Wednesday shooting also struck a water pipe in the apartment complex, causing some of the units to flood. Additionally, multiple other units had been hit by bullets, but police said they had not identified any other victims.

The management team for the apartment sent out an alert to residents, urging them to "stay in their apartments until further notice."

"The elevators are currently down and the water in the building is temporarily turned off and we will advise when it is back on. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Again, please STAY IN YOUR APARTMENTS. We will keep everyone posted when it is ok to leave," the message read.
