Nigel Sherrod Andrews, a 17-year-old from Atlanta, has been arrested and charged for the murder of a 37-year-old woman named Joyce Yates, who was identified on Tuesday after she was fatally shot and found in the parking lot of a strip mall last week. 

 

After finding Yates’ body in the largely abandoned Atlanta strip mall, police arrested Andrews a day later and charged him as an adult, The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports. The teen faces multiple counts of felony murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, aggravated assault and carjacking. 

“We are appreciative of the collaborative efforts of the Active Criminal Enforcement unit, Georgia State Patrol, Gangs unit and Zone 3 in assisting Investigator Malone in bringing this investigation to a close and providing closure for the victim’s family,” police said in a statement.

Andrews was booked into the Fulton County Jail on Friday. He remains in jail without bond. Police haven't provided additional details about the case. 

Several woman in the Atlanta region have been killed by gunfire in recent weeks. Earlier this month, police found 30-year-old Cormella Thomas after she was shot several times before being dumped near an interstate, WSB-TV 2 reports

A 29-year-old woman named Rechuna Kemp also died in South Fulton near Atlanta last month after being shot multiple times in front of a home, according to CBS46. Police arrested 30-year-old Quontavius D. Pickens for the shooting. 

In Duluth, Georgia, 36-year-old Carlether Foley was shot in the head and killed as she slept in her apartment on Sept. 26, ABC 13 reports. Police arrested Foley's 22-year-old neighbor, Maxwell Williamson, who said he accidentally fired his gun through the woman's apartment while he was cleaning the weapon.
