A 20-year-old man drowned on Sunday at Margaritaville on Lake Lanier, Fox 5 reports. Officials used a side scan sonar system to locate the body, 11Alive reports.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said in a release that the man drowned in the lake’s designated swimming area, and his identity will be announced once his family is informed of his passing.

“On Sunday afternoon, Georgia game wardens responded to the scene of a drowning at Margaritaville on Lake Lanier,” the department said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

At least 500 people have died at Lake Lanier, and almost 200 of those deaths have occurred since 1994, according to Oxford American.

The man-made body of water, which was created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1956, sits in northern Georgia on the outskirts of Atlanta, NBC News reports. While it remains a tourist destination, according to Mic, with about 10 million visitors annually, many believe the lake is haunted and lakegoers have reported seeing ghosts roaming the premises.

Residents have said Oscarville, a Black town, was destroyed once the Corps made the lake, according to the Gainesville Times.

Donald Glover hinted at the lake being haunted in the first episode of Atlanta‘s latest season. Netflix’s Ozark was also filmed at the lake.

In 2021, a boat on the lake exploded, injuring six people, including two teenagers, WSBTV reports. In 2012, the body of 13-year-old Griffin Prince was found in Lanier’s murky waters, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Usher’s 11-year-old stepson Kile Glover died after a freak accident on the lake, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
