Actress Awkwafina, who has been criticized for misappropriating Black culture, is facing more backlash after being nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Twitter users immediately followed up with criticism on Tuesday after the 33-year-old Asian actress received the nomination for outstanding character voice-over performance in Disney's Raya
and the Last Dragon.
Y’all didn’t think this was an embarrassing choice? A woman who Blacked it up to get on??? Y’all thought “I know she used to put on a fake Black accent to get famous but that’s the past she’s great , exactly what we need! Let’s give her an NAACP award! We love minstrels!” pic.twitter.com/BpXmWJQY9Q

As Blavity previously reported, Awkwafina said she doesn’t audition for roles where she’d have to use an Asian accent or mock the Asian community. At the same time, the actress has been called out for using a “Blaccent” in her roles. As a result, the Crazy Rich Asians star has been slammed for her alleged hypocrisy.
awkwafina is so strange for saying this. In one instance you don’t want Asian ppl do be stereotyped in film which is great but then you go on make a mockery of what you depict a blaccent despite having a normal speaking voice? It just doesn’t add up https://t.co/I5tAZh65OG

People are also debating on whether a non-Black person can receive an award from the NAACP.
@NAACP
@naacpimageaward I thought this award show was to celebrate black people only???? Yall are selling out now— Blowsephine Baker????????????????♈ (@Nefertitty6) January 19, 2022
Some who are defending the NAACP say the organization stands for the "advancement of colored people" in general.
Are people seriously not aware that colored people means people of color, i.e. minorities? Meaning everyone except us white folk?

Still, the main source of outrage for most people is Awkwafina's habit of mocking Black people.
I’m glad people are finally calling this out. Awkwafina has never had to answer for using a blaccent to blow up and then it disappeared somehow overnight once she made a lil money. And then to have the nerve to say what she said below? Fuck off https://t.co/Ip1GvIZblo

One of the most annoying things about Awkwafina is that The Farewell showed there's a competent actress under the blaccent but she instead decided to build her career doing shit like this
(The fact that shit like this works as a successful career builder is a separate issue) pic.twitter.com/03niBlgC2E— New Year New Mii (@LeahCsMovies) August 17, 2021
The controversial Hollywood star rose to fame in 2012 when she came out with her song “My Vag,” rapping about her private area.
