Viola Davis and Widows finally receive some award show love from the BAFTA 2019 nomations. However, there are major snubs, including If Beale Street Could Talk and Black Panther.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Davis has been nominated for her leading performance in Steve McQueen’s action-thriller. This is the first nomination Davis has received for her role in the film. Cynthia Erivo has also been nominated as a rising star.

Other big nominations include BlacKkKlansman and Green Book, which has been nominated for several awards, including Best Film. Mahershala Ali is also up for a supporting actor award for Green Book, and Spike Lee is up for directorial and adapted screenplay awards for BlacKkKlansman. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is also up for Animated Film.

However, BAFTA has failed to recognize If Beale Street Could Talk and Black Panther. Neither Barry Jenkins nor Ryan Coogler were nominated in the Best Film and directorial categories, and only Beale Street has been nominated for its adapted screenplay. Even more peculiar, Black Panther, whose score and Kendrick Lamar-curated soundtrack became the defining sound of 2018, wasn’t nominated in BAFTA’s original music and sound categories.

Where Black Panther has been nominated is the special visual effects and rising star categories. Thankfully, BAFTA recognized how exemplary Letitia Wright was in the film.

The BAFTA Awards will occur Feb. 10 at the Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Joanna Lumley.
