In his first statement since leaving the White House, former president Barack Obama voiced his opinions of President Trump’s first week in office. The statement was issued by Kevin Lewis, Obamas’ spokesman. Brief in nature, but loaded in content, there were no mentions of Trump’s name but Obama's words boldly took a stance on the current state of affairs within the country.

Long story short: he’s standing with protesters and fully fighting for the rights of the disenfranchised. Read the statement below:

President Obama is heartened by the level of engagement taking place in communities around the country. In his final official speech as President, he spoke about the important role of citizens and how all Americans have a responsibility to be the guardians of our democracy — not just during an election but every day.

Citizens exercising their Constitutional right to assemble, organize and have their voices heard by their elected officials is exactly what we expect to see when American values are at stake.

With regard to comparisons to President Obama’s foreign policy decisions, as we’ve heard before, the President fundamentally disagrees with the notion of discriminating against individuals because of their faith.

Obama has always been vocal about advocating on behalf of immigrant rights and religious freedom. In 2015, he called policies forbidding Muslims from entering the U.S. “shameful,” un-American and lacking compassion. Most were anxious to hear the 44th POTUS’ point-of-view on Trump's executive orders, especially since his criticism of Trump’s campaigning and policies has been subtle. His response, according to Politico, "reflects both the existential threat that Obama truly believes Trump poses to the country and a Democratic Party brimming with anti-Trump energy but lacking any clear leaders."

With such extreme executive orders, it was only a matter of time before a statement of this sort was issued.
