Here’s an interesting conversation about Prince between some very prolific artists and writers, including Questlove, Spike Lee and Anthony Hamilton. There were many profound moments, but the one that stood out for me was when the conversation focuses on Prince’s ability to convey a wide range of extremely painful emotions in just a 90-second song. Questlove spoke about “Sister” from the Dirty Mind album (39:57 in the video above). It’s a song about incest, and in it, Questlove mentions that Prince conveys the confusion, naivety and anger of being violated. It becomes a serious moment to speak in contrast to the stereotype that black men are always the aggressor. Check out where the conversation went from there.
