New York resident Cathy-Marie Hamlet got engaged on Sunday, and what should have been one of the happiest days of her life was ruined by racial profiling.

Hamlet and her fiancé Clyde Jackson were at the Angry Orchard Brewery in Walden, New York, to celebrate the latter’s 40th birthday with their friends, reports NBC News. Jackson eventually walked Hamlet to an empty table to pop the question, but when he started his speech, he was interrupted by a female security guard.

“Before we could sit down, a young lady from security approached us and said to him, ‘I’m sorry sir, but I have to check your back pocket. I was told that you stole a T-shirt from the gift store,’” Hamlet wrote on Facebook.

“My boyfriend then emptied all of his pockets, while still trying to keep the ring box hidden from my sight.”

After the woman left, Jackson started his proposal speech, but he was unable to finish because the guard approached the couple again and asked Hamlet to show the contents of her purse.

“MID PROPOSAL, the same young lady from security walks back towards and says to me, ‘I’m sorry, I need to check your bag. I was told that he gave it to you, and you put it in your bag.’ Mind you, my bag isn’t even large enough to fit a T-shirt,” she continued.

Hamlet obliged, but she questioned the woman’s motives.

“I said, ‘I know you’re just doing your job, but I can’t help but wonder if this is because we’re Black. We’re the only Black people here at your establishment.’ Of course, she said that that wasn’t the case,” Hamlet recalled.

Jackson finally finished his proposal and when Hamlet accepted, onlookers cheered. When their friends walked over to congratulate the couple, the security guard followed and demanded to search the whole party. This time, she brought five other guards with her. The couple’s friends denied stealing anything, but the security team wasn’t convinced.

“Of course my friends told them none of us stole a T-shirt from their establishment, at which point they started getting aggressive and saying that not only them, but also patrons saw my boyfriend steal the shirt and/or transfer it to me to put in my bag,” Hamlet wrote. “Another woman in security yelled to one of the male security, ‘Call the police! I saw you steal it.’”

Hamlet told them to review their surveillance cameras, but they did not oblige. Instead they “started taking our pictures, recording video, and took a picture of my license plate number.”

The group eventually left to avoid a confrontation. Hamlet’s post includes a picture of three of the guards smiling and waving during their departure.

“I have never been so humiliated in my life, myself and some of my friends left Angry Orchard in tears,” she continued. “On what was supposed to be one of the best days of my life, I was chased out of Angry Orchxard by security who followed us all the way to the parking lot.”

Hamlet’s post has been shared more than 5,200 times and received over 3,400 times.

Angry Orchard apologized for the incident on Monday, according to People.

“We reached out and spoke directly with the guest involved to express our apology and offer to make it right,” the cider company said in a statement. “Our security team approached a group of guests based on what they thought was credible information at the time.”

On Tuesday morning, Angry Orchard announced the guards, who work for an outside company, were replaced. Additionally, the brewery terminated a manager-on-duty following an investigation.

“This event does not reflect our company values of respect for all and creating a welcoming environment for our guests,” the company said. “While we wish it didn’t occur at all, we are treating this moment as a valuable learning experience for our staff.”
