Farmers markets are the pillar of food sustainability in any community. Access to fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy food options has not always been available for Black people. With the decline of Black farmers and Black-owned farmland, we also saw the decline in having these food sources within our community. We were also rarely welcomed into other communities to patronize their markets.

Historically, Black and brown people have lived in USDA-certified food deserts. These ‘deserts’ indicate neighborhoods where residents live more than one mile from grocery stores or access to fresh fruits/vegetables.

However, times are changing and environmental justice is a hot topic. With the increase of Black land ownership, community restoration, and health/nutritional education, we have seen an emergence of the Black-owned farmers market and fresh food sources.

And, of course, we have to do it better. These farmers markets add a dose of culture that can’t be found elsewhere. Aside from fruits and vegetables, vendors usually sell a variety of food, natural skincare and other items. And there is always great music!

Markets can be seasonable or year-round, depending on what they offer. Supporting these establishments is a surefire way to see any growth of Black farmers or Black-owned farmland. Shopping with local vendors and business owners is also a way to ensure the continuous circulation of the Black dollar.

Black-owned or Black-managed farmers markets can be found nationwide and are usually unique to their area.
