A Texas mother was brought to shock as she attended her daughter’s high school volleyball game on Friday, Sept. 2 and heard students chanting monkey noises at the Black athletes.

According to REVOLT, the mother recorded the students on her cell phone and posted the video on Twitter.

“Hi Friends and Family, sadly my post is not one of celebration,” she wrote in the video’s Twitter caption. “This past Friday my daughter’s Varsity Team Paetow High School (Katy, TX) played against Jordan High School (Katy, TX) and were heckled and harassed with the student section making monkey sounds towards our black and brown daughters.”

The mother, Lakeesha Kemp-Adams, continued sharing the experience in a series of follow-up tweets.

“My daughter’s team literally consists of black and hispanic girls, so you can clearly understand what they were facing,” she said. “Jordan’s Volleyball team literally has one black girl. Our girls were distraught and devastated to have to endure such hatred.”

Adams even shared that administration and school security were notified of the students’ disturbing behavior and “did literally nothing” and “dismissed” them.

She added that she has since emailed “formal complaints” to the school administration, and they have opened an investigation.

Adams went on to share that “mental health is so very important.” And the lack of concern for the “mental state” of the young, Black athlete girls after having to endure such cruel behavior is “disrespectful” and “concerning.”

“We will not let this get swept under the rug and normalized as kids being kids,” she continued. “It’s pure unadulterated racism.”

According to the Illinois USA, a letter was sent out to parents on Tuesday which included the Katy Independent School District’s statement in response to the incident.

“Dear Paetow High School Parents/Guardians and Staff, this weekend, we shared with you that the District and campus administration had launched an investigation into an incident that occurred at the Paetow High School versus Jordan High school volleyball game last Friday,” the statement read.

It called the money noises “inappropriate behaviors.” And added that the investigation launched was able to identify the students engaged in the behavior. It added that the behavior is “not aligned with the district’s and the UIL’s expectations for sportsmanship conduct during an athletic .”
