A Black Texas teen who had a violent encounter with a white police officer last month, has evacuated her home with her family, after receiving death threats.

Nekia Trigg, 18, her mother Antanique Ray and other relatives left their residence located in Forney, Texas because they feared retaliation from local residents and members of law enforcement after video of the incident went viral, TMZ reported.

On July 27, police received a 911 call about a young woman walking into traffic, CBS 11 reported.

When Kaufman County, Texas, Sheriff’s Deputy Conner Martin arrived at the scene, he spoke with Trigg, who was crying and denied walking in front of traffic. The teen said she was OK and just wanted to get home.

The deputy responded that he couldn’t let her leave by herself. The recent high school graduate told him that she didn’t want him to hurt her. Martin then held the teen by the arms and told her “I’m not going to hurt you, but if you keep pulling away, I have got to put you in handcuffs.”

At some point, the teen informed the deputy that he was hurting her shortly before the two fell to the ground.

That’s when video captured by a relative shows Deputy Martin lying on top the teen who can be heard yelling “I can’t breathe.”

The teen’s mother, who arrived at the scene from work, tried pleading with the officer to release her daughter.

Ray was later arrested for interfering with the deputy’s public duties and for assaulting him, according to the sheriff’s office.

The family has had prior encounters with the city’s law enforcement.

Trigg said she is concerned that her mother will be sentenced to prison and as a result she will not have any place to call home.

The family’s attorney, Kim T. Cole said she plans to file a civil rights lawsuit against Kaufman County and Deputy Martin for using excessive force against the teen, TMZ reported.

“Physical injuries from an auto accident will eventually heal, however, the psychological damage this deputy caused will be with Nekia for the rest of her life,” Cole said.

At this time, Martin is on administrative leave and his fate will be determined pending the results of an internal investigation, ABC 12 reported
