There are 43 million African-American consumers who have a collective $1 trillion in buying power. As a community we make on average of about 156 shopping trips every year, more than any other group (Neilson, 2013). Our buying power is projected to grow to $1.3 trillion by 2017.

Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year, and the day when most retailers begin to turn a profit. Blavity supports the #BlackFridayBlackout and asks that you do not take a trip to big box stores for Black Friday in economic protest. More importantly, we advocate that our community explores and buy from the creators, makers, and artists who are producing goods and services within our community.

Let’s influence the conversation. Let’s raise awareness about our economic influence.
