As Atatiana Jefferson’s family in Fort Worth, Texas, continues to grieve her senseless death, they are receiving emotional and financial support from Botham Jean’s family in Dallas.
According to Rolling Out, the Botham Jean Foundation is set to make a contribution to Jefferson’s family to help alleviate some of the funeral costs.
“Losing a family member is hard in any circumstance,” Allisa Findley, Jean’s sister and foundation president, wrote in a letter to the slain 28-year-old woman’s family. “Having a loved one taken in this horrific manner is one far more traumatic and a pain no family should have to bear. Unfortunately, too many families have had to suffer at the hands of those paid to serve and protect us.”
Jefferson was shot and killed by former Fort Worth Police Officer Aaron Dean earlier this month after her neighbor called a non-emergency number, requesting a wellness check for Jefferson. Her front door had been left open in the early morning hours, raising concern for her neighbor.
CNN reported the woman who lived with her mother thought an intruder was prowling outside of her home, leading her to grab her gun for protection and point it toward the window.
Dean reportedly did not announce he was a police officer, nor did he knock on the front door before firing shots and killing Jefferson in front of her 8-year-old nephew.
Just a year prior, and about 30 miles away, 26-year-old Botham Jean was killed by a law enforcement official while in his home.
Jean’s neighbor and former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger reportedly mistook his apartment for her own, subsequently shooting him in his living room. Guyger was sentenced to 10 years in prison on October 2.
According to the foundation’s website, part of the organization’s mission is to offer support to families impacted by police brutality.
“As long as poverty, injustice & inequality persist, none of us can truly rest,” the foundation’s mission statement reads.
