Brittney Griner is using her platform to bring other American detainees home.

Complex reported the basketball player issued a statement calling on the Biden administration to help facilitate Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich’s release.

“Our hearts are filled with great concern for Evan Gershkovitch and his family since Van’s detainment in Russia,” read the statement, which both Griner and her wife, Cherelle Griner, signed. “We must do everything in our power to bring him and all Americans home. We are grateful for President Biden and his administration’s deep commitment to rescue Americans. We celebrate their recent successful efforts to bring home Jeff Woodke and Paul Rusesabagina.”

The statement continued, “Every American who is taken is ours to fight for and every American returned is a win for us all.”

It concluded with Griner calling on “all of our supporters to both celebrate the wins and encourage the administration to continue to use every tool possible to bring Evan and all wrongfully detained Americans home.”

It’s been a week since Gershkovich was arrested by Russia’s Federal Security Service last week in Yekaterinburg. According to ESPN, the Kremlin believes the 31-year-old used his role at the WSJ as a cover for “spying activity.” The newspaper has denied these claims.

Gershkovich’s detainment comes at a particularly contentious time for the U.S. and Russia. President Vladimir Putin refuses to stand down in Ukraine — a conflict the Biden administration is firmly against.

The 31-year-old’s arrest is the first time since the Cold War that an American writer has been arrested on espionage charges in the Eastern European nation.
