Cam Newton, 32, found himself in hot water after sharing his views on women on Barstool Sports’ Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, according to the New York Post.
On Friday, he released an eight-minute video on his YouTube channel called “Let Me Explain My Comments.”
Newton said fans misconstrued his comments, and he expressed that society is “sensitive about topics that need to be brought to the forefront,” USA Today reports.
“I never once had this sexist mentality, this dictatorship mentality towards women, this mentality that women are beneath me because that’s completely false,” Newton said, according to USA Today. “I should have said on top of what I also said and mentioned that not only should a woman know when to be quiet, a man also should know when to be quiet.”
“I never wanted to demonize or to shrink the woman’s power in America,” Newton added in the video. “I got daughters. When the day comes out that my daughters look back and say, ‘Damn, dad, what did you really mean about that?’ I’m not going to cower away and say, ‘Oh well that just got [thrown] out of context.'”
Newton recognized that his comments upset many of his fans, but he doubled down on his original statement, saying he should have explained his thoughts more in “depth.”
“Not only am I bringing awareness to what the ‘bad b***h’ is. I’m also bringing awareness to what a ‘f**k boy’ is, what a man should be to their kids. To their families. I’ll be the first person to tell you: Did I make a mistake by not going into depth on a certain topic? Yes,” Newton said.
While speaking on the podcast, Newton originally said being raised in a household by his mother, father and grandmother showed him the difference between a “woman” and a “bad b***h.”
“Now, a woman, for me, is handling your own but knowing how to cater to a man’s needs. Right? And I think a lot of times when you get that aesthetic of: ‘I’m a boss b***h, Imma this, Imma that.’ No, baby. But you can’t cook,” Newton said on the podcast, the New York Post reports. “You don’t know when to be quiet. You don’t know how to allow a man to lead.”
