It’s wild to think that after such an illustrious career, Eddie Murphy is just now starring in his first holiday film. But that’s the case with Candy Cane Lane, the upcoming holiday film coming to Prime Video Dec. 1. The new poster for the film shows Murphy decked out in holiday gear, ready to usher in the Christmas season.
Not only is the film Murphy’s first holiday film, but it also reunites Murphy with the original Boomerang film team of director Reginald Hudlin and producer Brian Grazer. Also, the film’s title is a reference to a real place–an actual Candy Cane Lane (aka E Acacia Ave.) in El Segundo, CA. For 70 years, the homes of the El Segundo neighborhood become decked out in Christmas lights and decorations, transforming the neighborhood into a winter wonderland, according to travel blog Listen Journey Savor. The film is based on screenwriter Kelly Younger’s own experiences at Candy Cane Lane from his youth.
In the film, Murphy plays a man who makes a deal with an elf to win his neighborhood’s annual decorating contest. But as a deal with an elf would most likely go, things begin to go awry. According to the official description:
Eddie Murphy stars in this holiday comedy adventure about a man on a mission to win his neighborhood’s annual Christmas home decoration contest. After Chris (Eddie Murphy) inadvertently makes a deal with a mischievous elf named Pepper (Jillian Bell) to better his chances of winning, she casts a magic spell that brings the 12 Days of Christmas to life, and wreaks havoc on the whole town. At the risk of ruining the holidays for his family, Chris, his wife Carol (Tracee Ellis Ross), and their three children must race against the clock to break Pepper’s spell, battle deviously magical characters, and save Christmas for everyone.
Alongside Murphy, Ross and Bell, the film also stars Robin Thede, Chris Redd, D.C. Young Fly, Danielle Pinnock, Thaddeus J. Mixson, Ken Marino, Nick Offerman, Genneya Walton, Madison Thomas, Anjelah Johnson-Reyes, Lombardo Boyar, Timothy SImons, Riki Lindome and Stephen Tobolowsky.
