Continuing with our coverage of the Cannes Film Festival; The We and The I will open the Directors' Fortnight section of the festival this month..

Here's a departure from the usual dreamlike, whimsical themes of Michel Gondry's films like Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep and Be Kind Rewind. It's been called Gondry's most realistic film yet. The film stars Joe Mele, Meghan Murphy and Alex Barrios.

The We and The I, penned by Gondry, Jeffrey Grimshaw and Paul Proch and filmed in the Bronx, revolves around a group of high school kids riding back home on the bus while celebrating their last day of school. But there's a sci-fi twist to the story. Gondry confirmed with The Playlist last year that the school kids, "travel into the future by mistake and discover a machine that keeps people younger." 

Here's the official synopsis:

The We and the I is the heartfelt and comical story of the final bus ride home for a group of young high school students and graduates. As kids depart the bus for the last time, we get to learn about these graduates as they step into the world – their love, their conflicts, their despair and their hope.

Hmm.. there's no indication however of a sci-fi element going by this synopsis or the trailer. Mars Distribution (To Rome with Love) will be handling the film's release in France.

Michel Gondry is currently shooting the upcoming adaptation of the late French author Boris Vian's sci-fi/fantasy novel Mood Indigo which stars Omar Sy, Audrey Tatou and Romain Duris.
