Rapper Cardi B has promised to cover the funeral expenses for families who lost their loved ones in the Jan. 9 Bronx fire, People reports.
A Bronx native herself, the rapper’s efforts will be in conjunction with New York Mayor Eric Adams and the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City. All donations will be distributed to the families of each victim and will help cover repatriation expenses.
The building’s fire is believed to have been caused by a defective electrical heater and is the deadliest fires in over three decades, AP News reports.
In a press release, Adams called the rap lyricist a "superstar on and off the mic,” for partnering with his team and its relief efforts. "The resilience of this city reflects everyday New Yorkers who never turn their back on one another.".
“The city will be forever thankful to her and also to the grassroots donors and corporate partners who have been able to offer immediate support for our neighbors in need, to reestablish themselves during this difficult time," he added.
The Grammy-winner expressed her own sentiments in the release, saying, “I'm extremely proud to be from the Bronx and I have lots of family and friends who live and work there still.”
"So, when I heard about the fire and all of the victims, I knew I needed to do something to help,” she continued. “I cannot begin to imagine the pain and anguish that the families of the victims are experiencing, but I hope that not having to worry about the costs associated with burying their loved ones will help as they move forward and heal. I send my prayers and condolences to everyone affected by this horrific tragedy."
The Bronx Fire Relief Fund has raised more than $2.5 million for the victims, according to the release.
The 19-story residential building’s fire injured over 70 people and claimed 17 lives, NBC New York reports. The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said that all of the victims died as a result of smoke inhalation from the fire.
