It’s been an incredible year for Chance the Rapper and his upcoming performance is sure to be one of the best gifts he receives this holiday season.

Set to take the stage along with pop artist Kelly Clarkson and gospel singer Yolanda Adams, who have both previously performed at the White House, he will be performing at the annual Christmas Tree Lighting for the first time on December 1st.

For Chance, his connections with President Obama span long before his career began. He met Obama through his father, who at one time was the White House deputy assistant and deputy director of presidential personnel.  Since then, his music has become not only a favorite of the POTUS but, for the entire Obama family. “Malia listens to Coloring Book, and I send them stuff sometimes. I haven’t seen Malia since I was a kid. I think they were both in school the day that I went up there recently, but Barack was talking about it. Or, uh, President Obama was talking about it.”

He also was at the White House with several other artists in April to discuss the president’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative.  In an interview with GQ, he revealed some of his talks with POTUS. “At the end, everybody takes a group photo, and he’s signing stuff. And he keeps pushing me to the back, and I’m like, ‘I don’t understand why he won’t sign my sh*t. And he makes me wait till the end, and then he brings me up to his office, and we had a really good conversation about what I was working on. He told me I needed to start selling my music. He’s a good man. Even if he wasn’t president, if his ass worked at, like, Red Lobster, he’d be just a good man working at Red Lobster.”

Wondering what song(s) he may perform at the tree lighting? You’ll have to be awarded a free ticket to find out. Entries to attend open on October 7th and close on October 10th. Visit www.nationaltree.org for more information.
