Charlamagne Tha God shared on Monday’s episode of The Breakfast Club that, when he first moved to New York City, he thought HOV lanes were named after JAY-Z, XXL reports.

The topic came up as hosts Charlamagne, Angela Yee and DJ Envy discussed Brandy Bottone — a Dallas woman who made headlines after she was pulled over by police while driving alone in the HOV lane, which is considered a violation of highway laws.

Bottone argued that she had every right to ride in the carpool lane because she was 34 weeks pregnant. In her argument, Bottone cited the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Charlamagne argued that Bottone was in the right. But after Envy and Yee started talking about the laws surrounding HOV lanes, Charlamagne quickly put himself and his lack of knowledge on carpool lanes on blast.

“I want ya’ll to keep in mind that I know nothing about the HOV lane,” he said on the show. “First time I ever saw a HOV lane was in New York City and I said to myself, ‘Damn. Jay-Z got his own lanes in New York?’ I did. When I moved here in 2006, that’s the first thing I thought. ‘He really is the King of New York.'”

The hosts cracked up before moving on to a caller.

Twitter viewers were split. Some thought the host was telling the truth and thought it was hilarious, while others were convinced he was capping.

“He loves messing with y’all,” one user tweeted.

“You lying,” another wrote with several laughing and face palm emojis.

One user was shocked Charlamagne had never seen a HOV lane prior to his move to New York City.

“Wait where is Charlamagne from that he never seen HOV lanes?? I thought they were everywhere,” they wrote.
