Charlamagne Tha God was in a generous mood this past weekend.
The Breakfast Club host and proud Moncks Corner, South Carolina, native donated $250,000 to South Carolina State University, an HBCU, during homecoming, ABC Columbia reported.
Charlamagne presented the gift to the SC State University Alumni Association during the halftime show at the football game.
In addition to his gift, Charlamagne hosted a conversation with students in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center, a news release stated.
The Ford Family Endowed Scholarship Fund will be named after Julie Ford McKelvey, Charlamagne’s mother. The scholarship will support women majoring in English, communications or mental health.
Charlamagne’s mother graduated from the university in 1975 as an English major. The 41-year-old didn't attend college but has become an advocate for mental health.
The radio show host was invited to the university's homecoming after speaking with the national alumni association’s president, John J. Funny.
“SCSUNAA is proud to host a son of South Carolina who is doing remarkable things that changes the temperature of our society. He is respected for his viewpoints and his outstanding accomplishments,” said Funny.
In his Instagram post announcing the gift, Charlamagne encouraged others to give to HBCUs.
“Always remember investing in an HBCU is investing in the future of our people so the next time an HBCU ask for money, open that wallet. It’s a blessing to be a blessing! All Praises Due To God!!! P.S. Speaking of GOD my creator told me to announce that I’m tapped out until February so to all friends and family don’t even consider calling me this holiday season for nothing. Have a blessed day. #wefightdifferent.”
In another Instagram post, he said he was happy to see more gifts going to the university.
He said Rep. James E. Clyburn “stunted on us all” with his $1.7 million endowment that will fund the school's honors college scholarships.
“The SC State University Honors college is named after his late wife Dr. Emily England Clyburn who is also a Moncks Corner native and the reason Congressman Clyburn always tells me I’m the SECOND best thing to come out of Moncks Corner…???? which would actually push me further down the list because I’m putting my wife before me….anyway just always remember if you really rooting for everybody black the next time an HBCU ask for money, open your wallet!!!! It’s a blessing to be a blessing. GOD IS EVERYTHING!!! ???????? #WeFightDifferent.”
There have been other major gifts from celebrities to HBCUs this year.
One of the largest gifts to any university this year was Robert Smith’s $34 million donation to Morehouse College, erasing the college debt held by 2019 graduates as well as their families.
Another was Stephen Curry’s gift to help revive Howard University’s golf team.
