Former NBA star Chris Bosh revealed on social media that he had a terrifying health scare, which has changed his outlook on life.

What did Chris Bosh say about his recent health scare?

On Wednesday, Bosh, 41, shared limited details about the incident in a video posted to his Instagram account.

“So I woke up covered in my own blood. It was crazy. It was fast. It was instant. There was no warning. I didn’t have any time to prepare for it. I was getting ready to go on a date with my wife and the next thing you know, I was, I was on the ground,” Bosh began.

He continued, “I won’t get into specifics, but you can kind of see I’m still recovering [gesturing to his face, where dark circles were visible under his eyes]. I’m not gonna try to hide that one in case I look different, but it was a scary thing and it came fast.”

The recent medical scare shifted his perspective. He encouraged people to “not wait” and to “take action” to accomplish what they want in life. What was supposed to be an outing with his wife, Adrienne Bosh, instead became a lasting lesson.

“It could come fast. It could come quick. And I’m lucky to be alive,” the NBA Hall of Famer said. “I’m lucky I came back. It was just darkness, it wasn’t anything else. I went to the darkness, I came back. I have no recollection. I have no memory other than coming back here. So, don’t wait.”

“Some things change you overnight,” he said in the post’s caption.

Bosh also shared his experience in a Substack write-up

Bosh had a history of health issues during his NBA career. His 2014-2015 season with the Miami Heat ended after he was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lungs. In 2016, it was determined that his condition was career-ending, and he officially retired in 2019, according to Blavity

The two-time NBA champion also wrote about the health scare in his latest piece titled “Return From the Darkness,” from his Substack blog, The Last Chip.

“I blacked out. I didn’t see my life flash before my eyes. There wasn’t fear or a flood of thoughts. There was only confusion. Everything happened so fast,” Bosh wrote.

He recalled walking from his closet to the bathroom, as he was preparing for a night on the town, “when my body turned on me.”

“A numbing sensation shot down my left leg, that sharp, electric feeling you get when you bump your funny bone. Before I knew it, I was on the floor,” the Dallas native wrote.

He continued, “I slowly came to in a pool of my own blood while my wife frantically spoke with 911. I tried to move my body the way I always had, and it didn’t respond.”

Bosh after waking up: ‘What did change was an immediate outlook on life’

Bosh wrote that he had “no choice but to surrender.”

“It was a terrifying event, something I had never experienced before,” he wrote. “That’s when the realization hit me, everything can collapse at a moment’s notice. There’s not always a warning. There’s not always a symptom or a buildup to let you know what’s coming. One moment you’re walking. The next moment, you could be gone.”

He then explained what had happened after he woke up: “After coming back from the darkness, there was no euphoric clarity. No life montage flashing before my eyes. No voice in my ear telling me it’ll be OK and what to do next. Just the gratitude for still being alive, and a newfound, sobering awareness of how everything actually is.”

“What did change was an immediate outlook on life that was simpler and more honest. I stopped paying attention to things outside of myself and started paying attention to the things I had neglected. I began to focus on the passions and people who were already pouring into my life, rather than chasing validation from the unknowns and from those who weren’t reciprocating the same energy I gave them,” Bosh wrote.

“And I don’t think I’m the only one. Sometimes we’re either neglecting what’s right in front of us or waiting for some moment, some big event, some permission from an external source, to finally live our true lives. We tell ourselves that life will begin after some imaginary breakthrough we’re waiting on,” he added.

Before concluding, he urged his readers to use their time wisely and never take anything in life for granted.
