Coco Gauff Is World's Top Women's Player In Doubles At 18 Years Old: 'I Have No Words'

This exciting news is a direct result of Gauff’s stellar performance at the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada.

Gauff and Jessica Peluga, a fellow athlete from the United States, made it to the doubles match finals, and they went head-to-head against Nicole Melichar-Martinez (USA) and Ellen Perez (Australia) on Sunday to see which team indeed reigned supreme.

Gauff and Peluga ultimately came out victorious, and the win significantly boosted the women’s respective WTA rankings.

The 18-year-old tennis star was bumped up to being No. 1 in the world for women’s doubles, and she also now holds the No. 12 spot for women’s singles.

“Being No. 1 is pretty cool,” Gauff said alongside Peluga at a post-match press conference.

“I have no words. I didn’t really know it was coming this week and what I had to do, but [Pegula] told me yesterday. It didn’t make me more nervous though. I think if it was singles, I would have been more nervous,” she added.

Peluga also commented on Gauff’s noteworthy achievement.

“I’m so glad that I could help her get there today. Pretty amazing being 18 and being the No. 1 in the world in doubles,” she said. “I think we’re No. 1 in the race and top 2 Americans in singles, so it’s been a pretty cool little journey that we’re on together, even though I’m 10 years older.”

According to CNN, this accomplishment comes as Gauff is only 18 years and 154 days old, making her the second-youngest person to become the top women’s doubles player; Martina Hingis (Switzerland) still has the honor of being the youngest athlete to do so, as she was only 17 years and 251 days old when she achieved this feat back in 1998.

Gauff’s accomplishment comes just a couple of months after becoming the youngest French Open finalist in over two decades, as Blavity reported.
