Coco Gauff’s second set at the Wuhan Open started out shaky
The match-up wasn’t an easy feat for Gauff, as she looked cornered at 0-3 in the second set. However, she showed up fast, sealing the match in straight sets.
“Winning every match (in the tournament) in straight sets, I don’t know if I’ve done that before on a title run,” Gauff said, theGrio reported. “I just felt like I was really proud of what I accomplished this week, regardless of the result today.”
Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula praised each other at the Wuhan Open
Although this marked Gauff and Pegula’s first time competing against each other in a final, they had faced each other before, according to The Grio. According to WTA Tennis, Gauff and Pegula were doubles teammates for multiple years and one of the top pairs on the WTA Tour.
“We’ve spent a lot of time together and, even though I’m a bit older, I always admire and respect her so much,” Pegula said about Gauff, per The Grio. ”She’s just so mature for her age.”
On the flip side, Gauff acknowledged Pegula’s influence during her speech at the trophy ceremony.
“When I came on tour, you were one of the first people to be nice to me and welcome me with open arms. That really went a long way, so I appreciate you,” she said. “It’s great to finally play in the final against you. I hope for many more.”
