After readying for the release of her highly anticipated album for weeks, Coi Leray finally dropped her second, self-titled album, COI, on Friday. The drop follows a rollout of several well-received singles like “Bops” and “My Body,” as well as surprising collabs with grime artist Giggs and rising rap powerhouse Lola Brooke.

The sophomore project is a follow-up to her album, Trendsetter, which came out in 2022. That album came to moderate acclaim but didn’t quite hit commercial expectations. Still, the 26-year-old seems ready to prove herself again with a much better-anticipated reception than the predecessor LP to this new drop.

In an interview with Apple Music, Leray explained to Ebro Darden her decision to self-title the album.

“I feel like, even just self-titling it ‘COI,’ I want people to understand everything that is just about me,” she said. “At home, they call me Coi; Coi Leray is my brand. But my mom, everybody, you or anybody here in the room, I would want you to call me Coi ‘cause it’s a personal thing.”

The 16-track offering includes collaborations with David Guetta, Saucy Santana, James Brown and Skillibeng, as well as additional support by Cubeatz, London On Da Track, TBHITS and more. It also follows her viral appearance on Metro Boomin’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hit.

The New Jersey-based talent’s impressive accolades of Gold and Platinum records and showstopping performances have set the stage for this album to be a breakthrough hit. The hope, it seems, is also to prove the rapper’s longevity in the industry, which she has slowly but surely made her mark on to become a highly sought-after artist.

In addition, Leary has conveyed her and her label’s increased confidence in her talent as an artist with “timeless” music and a “global” appeal, according to a May interview with XXL.

“I have so many hits on my hands now,” the singer told XXL. “They heard ‘Players.’ I can’t wait ’til they hear what the album is.”

Will it live up to expectations? We’ll have to wait and see.
