Shortly after the release of “Bops,” Coi Leray came back with another song single, “My Body,” in which the rapper takes control of her sexuality and addresses her haters. Coi recently opened up about her experience dealing with body shaming, and the 25-year-old said she wants more acceptance for slim women in the music industry.

The new track is a rework of Lesley Gore’s “It’s My Party,” with Coi adding her spin. Her recent singles precede her next album, which the rapper discussed in a conversation with Apple Music 1’s Eddie Francis.

“I’m prepared for whatever, honestly,” she said. “I’ve dealt with the body shaming situation, honestly, my whole entire career. Shout out to all the slim women out there. I feel like I actually paved the way in the music industry for a slim woman to just finally be accepted, honestly, after a very long time. I’m talking since [the] Mýa and Left Eye days.”

In recent years, the emphasis has been put on women with round shapes in the music industry and on social media. Several songs make references to cosmetic surgeries such as BBLs. Leray thinks it’s important to represent all body types and not celebrate only one shape.

“It’s something important you talk about. It’s something very important you talk about. I wake up every day and say, ‘I love my body,’” she says. “When I put my clothes on, I’m not saying, ‘Yo, I’m going to put this on to troll.’ I’m putting it on because I love to look good, I love to feel good. And that’s what I personally, genuinely love to wear and like. When they make it about my body, it’s just ongoing. This gets old after a while. It really does.”

Leray has received a lot of criticism regarding her body. Just last week, she called out Latto for including a line about her body in the track “Put It On Da Floor.”

“Smokin’ on that gas, blunt big as Coi Leray / B-tches like to run their mouths, but I’m the type to run the fade,” Latto raps.

“Latto bye. Here you go talking about my body. Please do not come on here and talk about nobody BODY,” Leray tweeted. “Lol like seriously. Out of all things. Lmaooo ya blunt my size? Lmaooo this sh-t is never ending.”

Latto then shouted out Leray during her set at Coachella.

“Aye, Coi…I love your body, baby,” she said on stage, squashing potential beef between the two rappers.
