The NFL Players Association announced on Friday that free agent Colin Kaepernick is the winner of the Week 1 Community MVP award in honor of his "commitment to empowering underserved communities through donations and grassroots outreach," according to Sports Illustrated.
Before last season, Kaepernick donated more than $1 million and proceeds from his jersey sales to various charities. Kaepernick has also taken a hands-on approach with getting involved in the community by hosting a "Know Your Rights Camp" in various cities to encourage youth and teach them about interactions with law enforcement.
In 2016, Kaepernick made a statement when he took a seat and then kneeled during the National Anthem in protest of police brutality and injustice in the United States.
A number of fans, athletes, celebrities and organizations have spoken out in support of Kaepernick's cause including his fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi, Cardi B, players for the Cleveland Browns, players Malcolm Jenkins and Marshawn Lynch, New York police officers and the attendees of the #UnitedWeStand rally.
This season, it seems the league is turning its back on Kaepernick, because not one team in the league has signed the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback. Despite push back from football fans and the league itself during his protest, Kaepernick has continued to take a stand and give back to the community, and he's winning in every way possible off the field.
