Columbus Short, Evan Ross, Vivica A. Fox, Nelsan Ellis, Keith Robinson and newcomer Erica Peeples have all signed up to star in the drama feature “True to the Game," which is based on the Teri Woods novel of the same name.
A year ago, Manny Halley, CEO of Imani Entertainment Group, acquired film rights to the New York Times Best Selling author’s cult "urban classic" novels, "True To the Game" and "Dutch," with plans to bring both novels to the big screen.
Per the press release, "True To the Game", which has sold over 2 million copies worldwide, is a tumultuous love story set in the late 1980’s, that follows the lives of Gena, a young girl from Philly thrown into the rapid streets of Harlem, New York, and Quadir, a slick talking native New Yorker on a rise to street stardom. Young and in love, the pair ultimately risk it all to stay "true to the game".
Danny Green ("Mr. Sophistication") is directing from a script adaptation by Preston Whitmore (“This Christmas”), with Columbus Short producing alongside Leah Daniels-Butler (also casting director) in association with Imani Films. Halley is exec producing.
Said Halley in a statement: "’True To the Game’ and ‘Dutch’ are pioneering bodies of work that have solidified their place in the history books. Fans worldwide have been awaiting the creation of films for both books for a very long time, and we’re thrilled to bring them to life… To date, both novels have sold millions worldwide, and the timeless stories are very relevant still today."
Filming is currently underway in Los Angeles.
