The Blaxploitation films of the 1970’s were always ripe fodder for satire, but it wasn’t until some 15 years after their heyday when Keenan Ivory Wayans did it, when he starred, co-wrote and directed his 1988 film, "I’m Gonna Git You Sucka".

United Artists/MGM, which produced and financed the low budget $3 million film, obviously didn’t have a lot of confidence in it at first, not exactly sure of what they had. As a result, they gave the film a very limited opening during the 1988 Xmas holiday season. But when audiences enthusiastically responded to it, it forced the studio to open it wider the following January, and it became a sleeper box office hit.

The film stars several of the actors from the golden age of the blaxploitation era such as Jim Brown, Antonio Fargas, Bernie Casey and Isaac Hayes (along with a hysterical cameo by a young and then relatively unknown Chris Rock) all of whom genuinely get into the spirit of things, mocking their movie images with aplomb, and obviously having a good time doing it.

And as for the premise, it takes one of the oldest and most clichéd about a returning Army vet (Wayans) back in his old neighborhood to find out who killed his brother, who died from a serious case of "OG,"or "over gold," meaning that he died from an overdose of gold chains.

If you’ve never seen "Sucka" then that premise alone shroud give you a pretty good idea of how nutty, truly funny and inventive it is. It takes all the old cliches and stereotypes and turns them upside down, and inside out, reveling in the ridiculousness of it all. It’s an honest to goodness laugh riot which still holds up today, and the best thing that Wayans has ever created, along with his still ground-breaking TV comedy show, "In Living Color".

Now Kino Studios Classics is releasing the film for the first time on Blu-ray, but you’ll have to wait until February 2016 to get it. No extras or special features have been announced yet, but it’s impossible to imagine that there won’t be at least a commentary track with Wayans, and several of the people involved with the film, on the Blu-ray disc.
