Common’s daughter Omoye Assata Lynn graduated from Howard University School of Law, and the rapper couldn’t be more proud, according to Atlanta Black Star. In a sweet video of the commencement ceremony posted on Instagram, the 50-year-old beams with pride as he celebrates his only child’s academic achievement.
“There are no words to describe how proud I am!” Common, whose real name is Lonnie Rashid Lynn, said in an Instagram post. “Finishing law school at Howard University in the 3 years is pretty AMAZING! Congrats to my daughter and all the graduates of 2022. Now go out in the world and be great!”
The video shows Omoye getting her degree while waving to her family as they cheer her on and record the special moment. The video also shows the 25-year-old’s peers swag and surfin’ with their degrees in hand.
Later, Omoye and the rapper were all smiles as they posed for several pictures after the ceremony. In one of the pictures, the 50-year-old is seen giving the new graduate a kiss on the cheek.
In 2019, amid the release of his memoir Let Love Have the Last Word, Common revealed that his relationship with his daughter was strained for a while, People reports. During a conversation one evening, the then-teenaged Omoye broke into tears as she told the rapper that she questioned how much he cared about her.
“It kind of shocked me because that’s the first time I had ever heard it,” he said at the time, according to People. “I was like, ‘What do you mean?'”
Omoye revealed that she felt abandoned by Common throughout her childhood, following his split from her mother Kim Jones.
“She said, ‘It felt like you didn’t fight for me.'”
Common admitted that while “that love is obviously there” for his daughter, he “wasn’t able to have as much access” to her, which meant they “couldn’t build the strongest relationship.”
“We had a therapy session together, and I loved it. Well, not everything that was said, but I knew it was something that would help her move forward,” he said. “A woman’s relationship with her father definitely affects how she is in relationships.”
