In his new memoir, Common reveals he was molested as a child.

In Let Love Have the Last Wordthe Grammy-winning rapper claims he was abused by a relative of his godmother when he was just nine or 10 years old. In the memoir, the 47-year-old revealed that it wasn’t until two years ago that a chilling memory of being molested suddenly came back to him.

The "I Want You" rapper was working on a scene with his The Tale co-star Laura Dern when the memory came about.

“One day, while talking through the script with Laura, old memories surprisingly flashed in my mind. I caught my breath and just kept looping the memories over and over, like rewinding an old VHS tape…I said ‘Laura, I think I was abused,” he wrote

In his memoir, Common refers to his abuser as "Brandon."

“I was excited for a road trip I was about to take with my family. My mother; my godmother, Barbara; her son and my godbrother Skeet; and his relative, who I’ll call Brandon.”

The family arrived at his aunt's house in Cleveland. Common says he and Brandon had to share a bed together one night. At some point, he wrote, he felt Brandon's hand on him.

"I pushed him away. I don’t remember saying a whole lot besides ‘No, no, no.' He kept saying ‘It’s okay, It’s okay,’ as he pulled down my shorts and molested me. After he stopped he kept asking me to perform it on him. I kept repeating ‘No’ and pushing him away. I felt a deep and sudden shame for what happened,” he wrote.

The rapper suggested he may have repressed the memories as a survival tactic.

"Even now, two years after that flash resurgence of memories, as I’m writing, I’m still working through all of this in myself and with my therapist," he wrote.

The singer also noted that he hasn't spoke about the incident with Brandon, but he has forgiven him.

“I want to be a person who helps break cycles of violence,” he wrote. “This is love in action and I intend to practice it.”
