Country music star Thomas Rhett, who is white, has been lauded on social media after he shared a photo of himself wearing a silk bonnet to match his Black daughter as they prepared for bed.
In the photo, which Rhett posted on Instagram, the singer smiled alongside his 3-year-old daughter, Willa, with the caption: “Just a little night cap.”
As People reports, the post has racked up more than 475,000 likes. Many on Instagram praised the singer for educating himself about the hair care needs of his Black child.
“I am so happy that y'all [are] taking the time to learn about her hair and the importance of a bonnet,” one commenter wrote. “I know it has been a learning experience for your family as well.”
“Love seeing this!” another commenter wrote. “You have no idea how important that bonnet is. Thank you for caring, embracing and wearing it with her!”
“I love that you know to put your little girl in a bonnet. Some people don’t know that about Black folks hair!” another person reacted.
According to a separate People report, Rhett and his wife, Lauren Akins, adopted Willa from Uganda after a long adoption process.
“She was a total orphan and didn’t have any biological relatives, no one,” Lauren told the magazine. “Her life was going to be at the children’s home unless someone else tried to give her a home. … So I thought, ‘We need to find her a home.’ I thought we’d be the helpers — and then Thomas Rhett said, ‘We’ll do it!’”
Fast forward to 2018, and the couple now has Willa along with a 16-month old biological daughter named Ada.
