So… we already alerted you to the fact that Andrew Dosunmu, director of the beautifully hypnotic Sundance 2011 selection Restless City (a film I hope will get some theatrical exposure soon), is currently in production on his next feature film, titled Ma’George – a project previously workshopped at the Sundance Labs in 2005, as well as a recipient of a major grant from the Ford Foundation.

The film’s brief synopsis reads: “Torn between her African culture and new life in America, a woman struggles to please her husband and give him the son that will carry on his family’s legacy.

We now know more about the project… specifically its starring cast, which includes names that should get some of you excited (and others you may not know yet, but will eventually).

The film stars Danai Gurira as the lead character as described in the synopsis, frequent Jim Jarmusch collaborator Issach De Bankole (a man we’ve written about several times on this site), Yaya Dacosta (I doubt she needs an intro), Grammy Award-winning Angelique Kidjo (she likely doesn’t need an intro either), veteran Nigerian actress Bukky Ajayi, and British/Nigerian actor Tony Okungbowa who also starred in Dosunmu’s Restless City. Some may recognize him as resident DJ for The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

I dig that roster! And given what I’ve seen of Andrew’s past work, and the fact that cinematographer extraordinaire Bradford Young, who also shot Andrew’s Restless City (easily one of the most beautiful pictures I’ve seen this year), I’m looking forward to what cast and crew are cooking up with Ma’George. It’s already on my 2012 list of anticipated films.

As I learn more about the somewhat secretive project, so will you.
