Daniele Watts continues to quietly book work, building her resume, so take note, especially as when the inevitable question about who the upcoming young black actors and actresses are that we should be paying attention to.
In addition to being recently cast in FX’s new comedy series Braddock & Jackson, as a series regular, Watts has landed a starring role, opposite Max Burkholder in an untitled coming-of-age indie comedy from writter/director Morgan Krantz.
The film’s story, which is said to be similar in tone to Noah Baumbach’s 2005 dramedy The Squid And The Whale, comes from Watts (so she’s doing more than just starring in it), who developed it with Krantz. it centers on a romance between a petulant teenage boy (Burkholder) and his babysitter (Watts).
With comparisons to Baumbach’s film, expect a similarly warmhearted, cuttingly and even ruthlessly funny film.
Watts, who most will know from Django Unchained, was recently cast in the Odd Couple-like Braddock & Jackson, alongside Kelsey Grammer and Martin Lawrence who star as Chicago lawyers from different backgrounds who form a partnership after they accidentally meet in court on the worst day of their lives. Brought together by fate and greed, they develop a partnership and friendship, forcing each other to find the balance between the ethical and the unscrupulous in both their professional and personal lives.
Watts will play Lawrence’s daughter.
Watts’ resume also includes a stint on Showtime’s Weeds during its final season.
