Halloween is near, and in neighborhoods across America, people are getting creative and adorning their lawns with creepy, dark and ghoulish characters. Detroit resident Larethia Haddon is no exception. What is unique about Haddon’s choice of décor is that she saw no need to draw from fictionalized ghouls and ghosts, instead she got her inspiration directly from headlines. Haddon has placed six dummies in front of her home depicting horrific realities, including the Flint water crisis, police shootings and neighborhood violence.

Her goal is to raise awareness to the real life horrors that African-Americans face every day across the country. In an interview with the Detroit Free Press, Haddon said, “Want to get people to be a little more focused on the issues, what’s going on in the world. We need to stick together more. We need to come together. And if we don’t, this scene in my yard is going to be reality every single day.”

Haddon gave the following interview on Detroit’s Fox 2 News.
