R&B artist Jacquees recently anointed himself the "King of R&B" and, as Blavity reported, was met with widespread derision. Now Sean "Diddy" Combs has weighed in on the matter.
While Diddy is a rapper, he was an integral figure in the grooming of R&B superstars like songstress Mary J. Blige and the group 112. As Complex notes, the businessman was quick to put that expertise to work in explaining on Twitter why he believes Jacquees has no right to claim the R&B throne.
In the video, Diddy says, “That word 'king' is too loosely thrown around. Now I understand the concept that we are all kings, I understand that, but if we’re talking about in the competitive arena of music, cats give away the king thing too early. A couple of hits ain’t gonna do it.”

According to Diddy, to be king, “You have to sing. You have to be able to sing. … You have to write a number one record.”
The mogul also argued, “R&B’s not being made right now. This is not R&B. I wanna make sure y’all clear."
R&B, Diddy explained, involves "sharing your soul," "making love through your music, making a whole generation of babies," "adoring a woman, not you know putting her down, not talking about how you just wanna smash her, adoring her" and "sing[ing] somebody's drawers off."
He also had some advice for those who would like to make what he considers to be true R&B: "You have to be vulnerable. You have to be speaking about love. You have to affect women in a positive way, and your ass gotta be able to sing.”
As Billboard reports, Jacquees recently took his boasts from Twitter to the real world, declaring himself the king of R&B to Keith Sweat's face following V-103's Winterfest in Atlanta. Jacquees told Sweat he was the "king of back then; I'm the king now:"

Following that encounter, Sweat and Jacquees did an interview together with V-103, during which Sweat said titles like "king of R&B" mean little to him. Jacquees apologized to the singer for his earlier statement.
