In a recent interview with GQ, Diddy revealed that he wants to develop an app that allows users to easily identify black-owned businesses in their local area.
The interview, which refers to Diddy by his new name Love (or Brother Love), begins with Diddy explaining why he often changes his name.
“I like re-inventing. That's probably why I have so many name changes," he said.
Diddy (we'll keep referring to him as such because he said he doesn't mind) has had an undeniably booming career as entrepreneur, artist and executive. With a career such as his, we often want to know the secret to success, if there is one. Therefore, it's no surprise that the interviewer asks what it is that keeps Diddy "hungry."
“My culture,” he said. “I want to be an authentic, unapologetic warrior for black culture and the culture of the street and how it moves. My thing is most importantly to change the narrative of the black race. I can't relate to anything that isn't about that.”
That is what led him to want to develop an app that will allow users to look at a given city or neighborhood and see where the black-owned and black-friendly businesses are.
“This is not about taking away from any other community,” he said. “We'll still go to Chinatown. We'll still buy Gucci!” He laughed. “But the application will make it possible for us to have an economic community. It's about blacks gaining economic power.”
While there is an app that currently exists and provides a similar function called Official Black Wall Street, Diddy's efforts shouldn't go unrecognized.
He and Jay-Z have both been discussing and looking to make moves that will have more impact on the black community.
“I don't believe in passiveness,” he adds. “At some point there has to be some kind of fight. I feel like we've done a lot of marching. It's time to start charging.”
This all goes along with Jay-Z's call to financial freedom on his latest album 4:44, as well as Diddy's desire to own an NFL team. We all know the power of the black dollar; developing an app like this at this type of magnitude could be amazing.
