Beloved New York rapper DMX died on Friday after suffering from a heart attack due to a drug overdose.

As Blavity previously reported, DMX’s family released a statement calling the 50-year-old hip-hop icon a “warrior” whose music has inspired countless fans.

Last summer, the "X Gon Give It To You" artist gave one of his most memorable performances during his Verzuz battle with Snoop Dogg. Instead of approaching the opportunity like a competition, DMX and Snoop Dogg supported each other by sharing a performance space and celebrating each other's songs. They even prayed together before commencing what would be one of the last times fans got to celebrate with the artist.

After the announcing of his passing, fans remembered the event as perhaps the most heartfelt Verzuz battle ever.

Some of DMX's fans thought the Verzuz battle was a perfect way to honor the "Slippin'" rapper's contribution to the hip-hop community.

"I'm glad DMX got to see just a fraction of how much the culture loves him, this past year," a Twitter user wrote.

As news of his passing spread, thousands of fans have posted tributes of all types in honor of the artist whose first five albums reached No. 1 on The Billboard music charts.

"DMX was easily my favorite artist growing up. I had every album, every ruff Ryder song, followed any artist he endorsed," comedian Chris Redd wrote.

Another fan of the late rapper wrote that DMX, "changed the game forever and rap wouldn’t be where it is today without him."

"This one hurts," he lamented.

The Verzuz Twitter account also released a statement.

"The Verzuz family is deeply saddened by the loss of a cultural icon and a friend: Earl 'DMX' Simmons. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones. DMX always showed his authentic self to the world, especially during the painful moments, and for that he was one of a kind. His music, his spirit, and who he was, will continue to live on in the millions of fans around the world," the statement read.

"Verzuz exists to celebrate the creatives and give them their flowers. The DMX we all saw is the DMX we knew, and will continue to remember," the statement concluded.

While many will remember his gruff persona and memorable rap styles, some fans will forever cling to the softer side of him.

His family asks for privacy to grieve but said they will offer "information about his memorial service once details are finalized."
