A former Mount Carmel doctor has been indicted on 25 counts of murder

After a six-month criminal investigation, William Husel turned himself in to Columbus Police today. The investigation concluded that Husel is responsible for intentionally ordering excessive doses of painkillers over a four-year period, causing the deaths of dozens of patients.

According to Treva Lindsey, Associate Professor at Ohio State University, this hospital where the crimes took place primarily serves low-income people in Columbus.

The 25 victims were reportedly taking at least 500 micrograms of the opioid fentanyl, a level which Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien states is lethal. “At the 500 microgram level there would be no legitimate medical purpose,” said O’Brien. “The only reason would be to hasten their deaths.”

Some of the victims received 1,000 micrograms and two patients received 2,000 micrograms, according to a wrongful death lawsuit filed in Franklin County Pleas Court.

At least 30 nurses and doctors of the hospital have been placed on paid administrative leave.

Husel has been fired from by the Mount Carmel Health System and has been suspended from practicing medicine.
