CVS, Rite Aid and Walmart have announced they will limit the purchase of emergency contraceptive pills in stores across the country.

The announcement comes days after the Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade.

“Due to increased demand, at this time we are limiting purchases of Plan B contraceptive pills to three per customer,” Alicja Wojczyk, senior manager of external communications for Rite Aid told CNN in an exclusive email.

CVS has also followed suit.

In another exclusive email to CNN, Matt Blanchette, senior manager of retail communications at CVS Pharmacy, acknowledged that although CVS has an “ample supply” of Plan B and Aftera emergency contraceptive pills, the decision was made with an intention “to ensure equitable access and consistent supply on store shelves.”

Walgreens has not yet placed any restrictions on purchasing emergency contraceptives. Still, a representative for Walmart has acknowledged that purchase limits from the store may change according to fluctuations in demand.

Social media users seem to split their reactions to the drugstore brands’ decisions.

“I don’t see a problem with it,” one user tweeted. “At least people can get some instead of one person going in and buying the whole supply.”

“Now y’all going too far,” another user shared.

Emergency contraceptive pills like Plan B and Aftera are designed to prevent ovulation and a fertilized egg from attaching to the womb. They are taken in the days immediately after unprotected sex or the failure of other forms of contraception.

“Using emergency contraception does not cause an abortion. An abortion ends an existing pregnancy,” the Amerian College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists notes in their FAQs. “Emergency contraception prevents pregnancy from occurring. Emergency contraception must be used soon after unprotected sexual intercourse to be effective. It does not work if pregnancy has already occurred.”

According to REVOLT, the demand for emergency contraception has grown “substantially” since the overturning of Roe v. Wade last Friday.
