Still behind on the new season of House of Lies? Don’t worry, I got you. Catch up on episode 1 here.

WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW

This week, things got aggressive very quickly. Within the first minute, we came face to face with Jeremiah’s new girlfriend, Rita (played by the queen of funny, Wanda Sykes), who tries to knock Marty out in his own kitchen. She has the perfect amount of sass, honesty, and pettiness to balance out the Kaans and make Jeremiah happy.

Jeannie is back in the trenches, fighting a competitor who is trying undercut Davis & Dexter’s pricing. To make matters worse, Mark, her perfect boyfriend from last week, concocts a fake sexual harassment suit so he can realize his dream of becoming a high school Chemistry teacher.

The fun is far from over as we meet Doug’s friend Tess, the newest member of his Dungeons & Dragons guild. She is also the founder of a company doing $100 million in revenue and looking at a billion dollar valuation. And she’s under the age of 30.

She’s awesome.

Marty is always about new business, so he joins  Doug’s Dungeon’s & Dragons guild  in an effort to gain Tess’ business. She isn’t buying Marty’s pitch initially, but Doug comes to the rescue in a major way.

The pod realizes that Davis/Dexter has been lying about their own profit margins and springs into action. They pitch this information to Davis’ competitor, Novax, who rewards Marty and the squad with yet another monster check.

This is personal for Marty, as he knows about the false claims against Jeannie that cost her not just her job, but also her reputation. He tries to do right by her and succeeds — which is great to see — and opens the door for Jeannie to come back to K & A if she wants.

LINES THAT MADE US LOSE OUR CHILL:

“I am the best goddamned girlfriend anyone has ever had” – Jeannie

“Do they allow Black people at your club?” – Rita

A REAL MOMENT:

The New American Family

Jeannie, Marty, Phoebe and Roscoe are the perfect representation of a modern family. It’s the new normal, which is even more interesting, given the fact that everything about the situation isn’t close to what is usually deemed “normal.” It doesn’t matter though, because they are trying to make things work despite the myriad of lies, deceit, confusion, complex identities, interests and flaws all woven together. It’s not perfect, but everyone is trying to make it work, which makes it special and worth watching.
